OpenSG PLUS

An Open Source Realtime-Rendering API
as standard for virtual and augmented reality applications.

engineOpenSG PLUS is a project that is funded by the German Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). In this three-year project 9 german research institutions (universities and independent reasearch groups) working in the field of 3D computer graphics are cooperating to enhance OpenSG (Open Source Scenegraph) by innovative and trendsetting functionalities thereby supporting the OpenSG Forum through R&D work for new application areas.

Within the scope of the work package High-Level Primitives at the institute for computer science, University of Stuttgart a module for volume visualization is being developed under the direction of Prof. Dr. Th. Ertl. Based on this module the integration of volumerendering into VR- and AR-applications will be possible at very low cost.

Aims of the Volumerendering work package

  • semitransparent direct volumerendering
  • rendering shaded isosurfaces
  • combined rendering of volume data sets and arbitrary OpenSG-shapes
  • support for time varying volume data
  • restriction of volume rendering to parts of the data set via clipping
  • Level-Of-Detail volume visualization

  •
  • cross-plattform design to the widest possible extent
  • hiding as many details as possible for application developers
  • flexibility for future API-developement
  • Demo Application - Compiled for SuSe Linux

    OpenSG Volume Renderer (3.0 MB)
    Runtime libraries (7.7 MB)
